Film Scoring

13-Week Course
Taught using Apple's Logic X, ending with an Open-to-Public screening. This course is ideal for students who want to improve and deepen their current knowledge and understanding of film music and further develop or start developing their skills for scoring to film.

Briefing: Taught using Apple’s Logic X, this 13-week film scoring course is intended to introduce students to technical and aesthetic approaches to scoring for different film types. The students will produce scores to various styles of moving-images, including commercials, animations, documentaries, short films and scenes from feature-length films.

Upon completion of the course, students will have:

• An original "music library" containing of several compositions, appropriate for different film styles
• An understanding of technical angle to film scoring
• An understanding of aesthetic perspective to film scoring
• Contacts with selected film directors and producers

Student requirements:
• Students must own Apple Laptops and Logic X
• Basic Logic skills
• External Hard Drives (100GB min)

Composition intensive 

Intended to provide an accelerated training in composition and supporting disciplines.
3-Week Course
Age group: 16 and up
Course Format: A combination of group and semi-private sessions.
Group size: up to 6 students
Price $700
Winter Course: December – January 
Spring Course: February - March 
Summer Course: June - July

Briefing: This 3-week intensive composition course is intended to provide an accelerated training in composition and supporting disciplines.
The course is ideal for students who want to improve and deepen their current knowledge and understanding of music, further develop or start developing their compositional skills. The course is also extremely beneficial for students who are interested in starting or continuing their music studies and applying for music education at music schools on NY and surrounding areas.

Upon completion of the course, the students will have:
• A composer's portfolio containing of several compositions
• In-depth knowledge of several key 20th century music pieces, as well as the strategies to continue their own research in the area.
• Better understanding of music and performing arts.
• Better sight reading, rhythm and music theory skills.
• Contacts with NY based music organizations.
• Subscriptions to NY based music newsletter with opportunity listings.
• Free tickets to selected music events in NYC.

Course Description/Schedule:
10 – 11 AM - Conversations, Group Class.  Faculty leads a group discussion about key pieces of 20th century music. Sessions will include listening to selected works, analyzing the scores and active discussions about the music elements, style, instrumentation and social context.
11AM – 12 PM - Music Theory. Group Class. Sessions will alternate between explorations of harmony, solfège and sight-reading, rhythm training, counterpoint, and musical form analysis.
12 – 1PM - Group Composition. Students will write short pieces based on a given theme without the use of the piano. These sessions are intended for students to develop inner hearing and train the students to put it to use in the creative process of writing music. The group environment and writing based on the specific theme provide additional creative and intellectual stimulus for the students.

1PM - 2PM- Composition Practicum – Semi-private CompositionStudents have a 30-minute semi-private consultation each. Other students are encouraged, but not required to sit-in each other's sessions.The sessions include the use of piano, keyboard or computer playback.

Student requirements: Placement interview may be required.
•Basic Piano skills
•Basic understanding of music theory
•Ability to read music fluently in treble and bass clefs
•Understating of key signatures, basic harmonic and tonal functions
•Understating of rhythm, meter, including composite meters and irregular sub-divisions.
•Basic knowledge of music history, major stylistic orientation of different time periods
•Basic understanding of baroque-style counterpoint.
• Music paper (large quantities), sharp pencils and erasers.
• Access to computers (at home) for downloads of related and assigned materials.

Introduction to Logic Pro X

Basic techniques and tools in Logic X learned through fun composition exercises. Performance and collaboration opportunities possible.

Designed for directors and filmmakers of any style-genre. 
We cover the basics of music theory, harmony, terminology, form and styles, in order to make the music composition process more understandable and relatable to non-musicians, and to facilitate the conversation and collaboration with composers. In addition, we teach the basics of compositions and music editing, and encourage our students to experience the process themselves.
